Yep so tired. That being said I hope he is also committed to eliminating murderers, thieves, pedophiles, white supremacists… I mean if all it takes is his commitment to make the problem go away then have it!

I'm honestly getting geared up to leave after 39 years. I've voted in every election since I was 18, and been on the losing side of every single outcome. This state has never moved left in my lifetime. Extrapolating the trend is honestly starting to get me concerned, and I'm not sure I want my kids growing up in this.

I like guns, beer, boots, meat, the outdoors, and that's just not nearly enough anymore.

BoinkBoinkEtAliae

It's discouraging, not much will change until the federal government steps in to prevent states from gerrymandering, voter restrictions, and voter suppression. The more the left and liberals want to vote, the more the right makes sure those voters don't count.

There are enough angry fashy young and middle aged adults that I can't see how were going to just ease out of this. The big lie is still going and Trumpism is the new Republican style. History gets rewritten in near real time.

It's concerning to say the least.

CNN is definitely distorting the news.

So you're just shamelessly lying. Are you a Republican?

It's in the fucking article already. CNN can't be distorting the news if you're then quoting CNN as actual news to contest CNN's news. That's lunacy.

A bill Abbott signed in 2019 designed to audit untested rape kits across the state and set strict testing requirements was named the Lavinia Masters Act. Masters was there when he signed the bill, and she is a member of Abbott's sexual assault survivor's task force. Texas state Rep. Victoria Neave has been working alongside Masters for years to clear the rape kit backlog. At one point, there were about 19,000 untested kits.

No, I am pro-abortion, I would say until a certain growth of the baby unless even after that point of growth the baby has problems or the mother, then I am still for aboriton. If no one was 'for abortion' then no one would have one.

You have to be 'for abortion' if you are a woman who doesn't want a child for whatever reason.

We have a right to choose (in some countries, fortunately), and in that very instance of choice, you're, therefore, for abortion. Every girl or woman who's had one, for that time was 'for' or pro-abortion for whatever reasons brought them to that point. Abortion is a medical procedure that benefits the person having it, and in a lot of ways including literally saving lives.

Anyways just wanted to say that, it's 'not no one is for abortion' and just pro-choice, it's both pro-abortion and pro-choice.

Darnitol1

4 points

You're absolutely correct, of course. I just thought that spelling it out might ring a bell somewhere for someone who maybe hadn't thought of it that way. Also, I think there are people who are pro choice because abortion doesn't violate their sense of morality (as in, they don't consider it to be a human life yet) and there are people who are pro choice even though it violates their sense of morality. I'm the latter, and I think it's important that people like me make it clear that, although I am bothered by abortion, it's not my right to make choices or even suggestions about anyone else's reproductive health.

I hate nostalgia so much but I'd like to be in the 90s again pls. Lol

ETA : in order to stop rapes you would have to predict who will do it. So even though all sane people know this is a bullshit lie from Abbot it would technically mean we would have to have psychic cops. FFS. This isn't the Minority Report, Abbot.

It’s obvious that any politician who says they will eliminate some crime is completely full of shit. It isn’t possible to completely eliminate any crime entirely because you can’t prosecute a perpetrator until they have actually committed the crime, so the presence of crime is a requirement for enforcement.

It reduces total amount of abortions too. Not everyone is able to get (safe) out of state abortion, and not everyone willing to risk unsafe abortion. So while unsafe abortions will go up, there will certainly the some drop in abortions. Unless you suggest literally every single woman who would normally get abortion in Texas, will now either get out of state abortion or an unsafe abortion.

People v. Turner

People v. Turner, formally The People of the State of California v. Brock Allen Turner (2015), is a criminal case in which Brock Allen Turner was convicted by jury trial of three counts of felony sexual assault. On January 18, 2015, on the Stanford University campus, Turner, then a 19-year old student athlete at Stanford, sexually assaulted 22-year-old Chanel Miller (referred to in court documents as "Emily Doe"), while she was unconscious.

No, I don’t know that. Your rights were established in a binding constitutional document and no where does it say that you are allowed to end a life because you decided to have sex (the act of reproduction) without being able to accept the consequences or use protection. Is rape a different story? YES. Is this man probably making stupid remarks? Possibly. 5,000 rape kits is actually statistically enough to use in order to cover pregnancies caused by rape, but not enough to test all rape victims regardless of pregnancy.

Statistics point to fewer abortions under Dem leadership. Mainly because of the availability of both affordable birth control and sex education. For more, "Who coulda known...." see the rise in teen pregnancy and fall in high school graduation rates when Texas banned sex education in school.

To add to this - when I was in middle school in the late 80s and very early 90s, I attended school in a town with less than 9k people, in rural TN, where there were more churches than restaurants. We had sex Ed and not just fucking abstinence only sex Ed.

They showed us how to put on condoms using anatomically correct devices. We learned about STDs and we saw plenty of graphic pics. We learned about various health issues that can arise from anal sex if proper precautions aren't taken.

In the 80s in Southern Baptist saturated rural TN!

We also had someone who was HIV positive come and talk to us.

In middle school.

Same school, in 2021, they only teach abstinence only sex Ed now.

Agent Smith smirking smile. It's not rape without a conviction, and if the rape kit's not tested, there's no conviction.

That is of course the easiest way to get rid of rapists. Stick your head in the sand and pretend that rapists aren't raping people.

Is he going to do this through some kind of thought-crime division? Arrest all the rapists before they commit rape? Because from a due process standpoint, in order to eliminate the actual rapists, the act of rape is an unfortunately necessary step.

Or is he just going to kindly ask all the rapists to not do rape?

It’s important to keep in mind that while Greg Abbott does in fact hate women, he’s not alone, as there are also plenty of additional men and women legislators who also hate women and support his policies.

Vote them all out.

Senator Cornyn led the Sexual Assault Forensic Evidence Reporting Act in 2013 to understand just how big the rape kit backlog was. As a result of Cornyn's SAFER Act federal resources to state and local law enforcement to audit their rape kit backlogs increased by 35%. In 2019 President Trump signed the Debbie Smith Reauthorization Act that provided Texas funding to eliminate the state's rape kit testing backlog. As a result, in 2020 Texas received $6.9 million for rape kit testing. In that same year, Governor Abbott signed the Lavinia Masters Act investing more than $50 million to test the rape kit backlog, hire necessary staff and implement the technological infrastructure needed to avoid a backlog in the future. Texas has reduced its rape kit backlog by 80% in eight years and is on track to eliminate it altogether.

Why did states let it get so bad? Because so many lawmakers are men.

In Virginia our attorney general made it a priority to eliminate the backlog of untested rape kits. So glad my state has turned the corner and has progressive policies in place. Just a few years ago we were “vaginal probe state.”

I don't understand what his comment means. So rapists means already done so how does that help the women/girls that become pregnant after the fact?

I wonder if this guy would be so adamantly against abortion if a cure for his paralysis could be found from stem cells retrieved from an aborted fetus?

He'd probably use the treatment & then ban it for others. Kind of like what happened when he sued his neighbor for the injury that caused him to be paralyzed only turn around and limit others from doing the same...

He's was just spouting off at the mouth because he couldn't think of anything else to say. Eliminate rape.....seriously? I'd give my left arm if that were even possible. This guy is a joke. He's tired of being "owned" by the Libs, and his words are nothing more than the death rattle of the old republican guard. Texas will be blue within a decade, probably less.

Because the new Texas abortion law doesn't differentiate from pregnancies that are the result of a rape. There fore a 13 year old girl that is pregnant due to rape would be forced to carry the pregnancy to term in Texas.

When Governor Abbott was asked about this he made the response mentioned in the article; that all rapists in Texas will be arrested. Pointing out how behind Texas is on rape kits demonstrates how much of this pure political lip service.

sirflooferson

Yeah that might be a good point if California or New York were trying to put bounties on women who try to exercise their constitutional rights, but last time I checked that was purely a Texas thing.

slayer991

Sadly, this isn't uncommon or just a "Texas" thing. At one point the city of Detroit had 11 thousand untested rape kits.

"The rape kit test results also revealed a disturbing find, since replicated in other cities across the country: there are a lot more serial rapists than anyone previously thought. Detroit’s rape kit tests point to an estimated 824 repeat offenders."
