It's a loss for the ones left behind. A draw is it only if nobody mourns you.
On the other hand, being mourned means that people liked you. Nobody's mourning the cancer. That might be an outright win.
Pro tip: don’t make friends.
We miss you Norm.
I'm at an age where celebrity losses really hit fucking home. I still haven't gotten over Robin Williams.
Yup, Robin Williams really still gets to me - even more so after hearing his wife’s story about his struggles in the end.
What?!?!??! This is how I find out??? Sad
Well, it was seven years ago.
I meant Norm, not Robin...sadness
What????? 7???? You mean 3? How old am I again?
Yah, it’s hard to believe - definitely doesn’t feel like seven years.
Shhhh as long as you don’t ask that question you can never really be sad about it, Schrödinger’s Age
lol i also thought you ment about Robin Williams
Yeah that was a weird place to decide to reply.
Damn, same here. Just found out reading this post. I don't think any celebrity death will affect me as much as norm
I don’t think that’s an age thing 😅
It can be, for sure. When you're young you haven't "known" the celebrities for long. But as you get older, you realize that the world around you is getting older, including the young, vibrant people of your childhood. It hits different because you still see them as they were when you experienced them, and their death is a reminder of how much left you have to lose.
He’s the first celebrity I can remember where I was when he died. I had to take a minute on that one. He was a treasure.
I won't ever get over Robin. It was like loosing a family member
Same here and I don’t think I ever will.
Side note: I love your username so much and your avatar looks so much like my 3D pic it’s eerie :D
i'm still dealing with the death of Rick May, the voice actor of The Soldier from TF2 and Peppy Hare from Star Fox 64, honestly i think the whole tf2 community is still grieving
It wasn't that long ago but the loss of Sean Lock broke me.
If it makes you feel any better, theres a pretty good chance hed be dead if he didnt kill himself.
I got fucked up by watching What Dreams May Come about a month before his death. Not over it, still.
We miss you very much Norm! You`ll never be forgotten.
Had to confirm with Google, as I hadn't heard. This SUCKS.
Exactly we will
fuck I just saw this
Gonna be another Norm night on YouTube
His older segment on Conan alongside the actress from Melrose Place, where they talk about her movie with Carrot Top, is just incredible.
Conan: What’s the name of the movie?
Actress: umm…Chairman of the Board
Conan (to Norm): Do something with that you freak…
Conversation continues for a few seconds.
Norm interrupts: I bet the board is spelled BORED
Conan bursts into uncontrollable laughter while the actress questions her life decisions.

Makes me laugh every time
Yep. Just got done watching the "35 minutes of why Norm Macdonald got fired from weekend update." Man I loved watching him rip OJ apart.
61 is too damn young, especially for a legend like Norm
He should have had at least 20 more years of rambling old man left. We’re lucky he gave us so much during his time though.
Hes been gracious enough to be a rambling old man since he was a young man.
He says he says I says
I've heard it said many times that if Norm lived to be 80 or whatever and had Alzheimer's, people would still think he was doing a bit.
Seriously. Fuck Netflix for canceling his show.
Those guys are real jerks

You know who should have died?
You guessed it: Frank Stallone.
He wasn't that much older than me 🥺
So Henrietta Lacks might be one of the few who truly lost to cancer?
idk those cells are kept in a lab and studied and tortured and used to learn how to kill it’s fellow cancers. Seems like an even bigger L than dying.
Those cells are kept in many many many labs. Hell I have used HeLa and I don't even study cancer.
You just needed a delicious substitute for bacon bits.
Fuck I'm a vegan now.
We need more things named after her
TIL, huh. That was a wild ride on Wikipedia
The book was called "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks". If her cells are still alive, does that mean she's technically still around?
Oof that's a really philosophically loaded question. I think I need a degree to answer that?
Nah. Let's just go rebuild a boat.
With her cells. Will it be the ship of Theseus or will it be Henrietta Lacks?
The book goes into that in great detail.
Nah, man. Not Norm.
Thanks for making the world a better place, Norm.
We miss you already.
You know what? Norm was right. I'm going to remember my MIL and my Mom as not losing their battle with cancer, but beating it to a draw instead. That makes things a lot less sad.
It may take them, but they’re taking the cancer down with them. They’re fighters.
It did take them, but not without a serious fight!
“If I go down… I’m taking you with me!!”
Leave it to Norm to make me smile on that one.
Holy shit.. this comment thread is how I found out we lost a great one today. Rip Norm one of my favorite comedians.
Same bro, this sucks
This quote, and the context of today's events, is the opposite of a mademesmile. Dude was probably already battling cancer secretly when he said that.
That’s what made me smile, the fact that while battling cancer privately, he was still able to joke about it, and be brave.
Norm joked about everything. He wouldn’t want people getting bummed.
Hate to break it to you but.... https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/HeLa
Yes cancer cells can survive outside of the body, but it is also significant to know that this only applies when they are kept in a stable environment. The HeLa cells are kept fed and in a sterile, stable condition which is why they can continue to divide without starving (cell division cannot happen without the proper nutrients and building blocks, because of the conservation of mass: no new cells can be made from nothing). The article itself states this. Outside of these environments, the cells will likely die of starvation or pathogens and microorganisms in the environment.
This is of course a very interesting point to bring up though, and yes, in good conditions cancer can thrive outside of the body for an indefinite amount of time. (If this comes off as harsh or mean, I apologize. I just wanna clarify for those who might be confused and I still applaud OP for making this connection!)
Solid points all in all!
Bums me to hear about his passing. You know what would cheer us up? Let’s put beer in a bucket and feed it to a donkey to get it all messed up.
Nah, maybe later.
I’ll go put some beer in a bucket.
All I need is a bucket and a donkey. Here's to you norm. Rip
Isn’t that what happened with Ripley and the last alien in the 3rd movie?

David "Sonny" Lacks Jr. Henrietta Lacks, her cancer cells are still alive and are part of the reason we understand cancer as well as we do.
Edit: she died in the 1970s i belive, we still use her cells for cancer research to this day. Its an amazing and sad story so i suggest you learn more about it.
NOOOO!!! Ugh… the world’s a bit less funny now…
HeLa enters the chat
You gotta love his ability to find a silver lining out of such a horrible experience.
Never could understand ANY disease or parasite that kills its own host.
Diseases or parasites that kill us aren’t meant for us, most of the viruses today we fear come from animals
Also cancer is just cells that can’t kill themselves and grow out of control, they have no motive but reproduce
RIP Norm. I enjoyed your comedies very much.
"Alright then we'll call it a draw" black sir Knight
Norm is just a legend and I am heartbroken right now, there’s no segment or joke that he’s told that didn’t make me laugh. Rest peacefully, Norm.
Depend it can also be a win for me
This decade has taken too many legends in barely 2 years
Fucking Norm. One of the greats of all time.
There is more after that quote. “…it’s not like the cancer goes home and *ucks your wife after.”
I'm the second of four girl. I was born 10 months after my older sister. I was the only one adopted out. According to my older sister, our bio parents said they "couldn't afford 2 kids in diapers at the same time."
I have no problems being adopted. My mother is the greatest person I know. She gave me the blueprints for who I am today. But my father? My adoptive father died when I was just two and a half. I don't have memories of him. Didn't get to know him.
But this still knocked me on my ass in an absolutely profound way. I needed this more than I think I could possibly have realized.
Thank you for sharing this. 💜
So mademesmile is basically r/mademesad now
That’s actually a good idea for a very cool sub. That tom middelton gif (when he’s crying with just a little bit of joy) should be the logo of the sub!
Wait Norm died?!?!?!?
So sad. Loved that guy and I would watch ANY movie he was in. This is a sad one.
Wait did Norm die?
Fuck... Do we have a cause of death? Does anyone know where OJ Simpson is?
Cancer. Can’t blame OJ this time.
...or so the Germans would have us believe
Was it 6 million or 600? It’s bad either way.
Rip Norm 😔
Favorite comedian, bar none, hands down, for all time.
Someone died, and it made you smile?
His attitude towards a private battle he was fighting does.
Someone died, and it made you smile?
This may come as a shock to you but fondly remembering the dead is a valid form of grief.
Congrats on the draw Norm.
This is true, but with COVID, the virus is still “living” in the lung, nose, airways… so put a mask or plastic bag on the newly deceased corpse so that when they are bopping down the stairs, and their lungs are vibrating, that virus isn’t getting out to contaminate the air in the pathways, trucks, hospital elevators… en route to the morgue.
This is why I didn’t volunteer to serve as a pathologist or undertaker during covid. Cancer cells die, but virus DOES linger for a while. It doesn’t need much “food” and can still self assemble and escape once the parts are made… parts still exist even in dead cells.
I demand a rematch :(
My friend: Then what is a loss?
Me: ... Have you seen Akira?
"... It's not like the cancer goes home and fucks your wife after."
There’s the Norm I know and love. Just when you think he’s done, there’s more…
what a fucking legend.
I’m sorry the way a man who just died of cancer viewed “battling” cancer bothers you.
My world just got a little darker. Love you Norm.
61 years old :(
Not if a cancer biopsy is used to create cell lines for cancer research. The cancer is perpetuated for the benefit of science and to save human life in the future. In this case, humanity can still consider this a win. See the book “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks”
Made me smile...? Made me weep. This is how I find out Norm died? I gotta go... cry for 61 years.
Technically a Pyrrhic victory for the cancer.
Cancer isn't trying to kill you, cancer is one's immune system malfunctioning, it is cellular repair gone awry. Some people believe it would be a positive thing if we stopped looking at it as a battle.
Rest In Peace Norm and thank you for giving the gift of laughter.
This one really hurts :,/
I've been thinking about that set a lot. He had a whole 15 minutes where he was working out that diagnosis and nobody knew
Fuck man, I'm laughing and crying. Fuck. Norm.
Cancer really is crazy because it isn’t a malicious disease it is a mutation or rampant biological function that thinks it is honestly doing what it is supposed to. If cancer was alive and had an agenda it is like it’s agenda would be for you to live and it thinks it is contributing to that cause.
And the Democrats, and politics, and taxation etc etc etc
This is just a sad day
His voice was just dripping with sarcasm and snark almost all the time.
He made me laugh and I will miss him.
F. RIP Norm.
Anybody else read the quote in his voice?
Hey, it’s me! I miss Norm.
He truly represented truth in comedy. Truth is funny and it hurts, just like life.
Guess it depends on your perspective.
Norm’s comment will soon enter popular culture. This will stick.
Nobody mention Henrietta Lacks
I love this!! RIP Norm
Well now I’m crying.
PSA: If you have not seen "Dirty Work", you totally should. Norm was hilarious in that.
If you get a chance watch some celebrity jeopardy. He's hilarious.
A legend is lost.
I am still in shock, but this made me feel better
I think Norm would appreciate everyone taking a few minutes to laugh at him and his cancer: https://youtu.be/BLKFQylnANY
One of the few people I'm sad to see go.
Tell that to Henrietta Lacks
Damn he played pigeon on mike tysons mystery and he is the only reason I loved that show. So funny and such a memorable voice too. Glad he isn’t suffering anymore.
Hey just a fun fact cancer cells are actually immortal and live on past the host’s death. They operate opposite of normal cells that have a lifespan.
Source: Cancer’s Relationship with Telemors.
That’s not fun. Go away science! /s
Actually after you die alot of your body functions as normal for a short time including the growth of rogue cells like cancer so.
You must be the life of the party
But you die when cancer wants you too…
That's why the Tassie Devil facial tumours are so deadly.
When they fight they pass the face cancer on.
Came to the comments to read other Norm quotes just to discover he died... like what? This is sad, I wen't from smiling after reading the tweet to sad. Shit!
gg Norm… you will be missed
"Norm is at his funniest when nobody is laughing."
I forget who said it. I think it was Adam Sandler. That will forever stick with me.
But is it really
When did he die? Jeez, I don't recall reading anything in the news...
By far the most underrated comedian ever! Rest in power.
Just rewatched his celebrity jeopardy. “It’s funny because it’s bigger than a normal hat.” RIP.
The bastard took it down with him. What a champ.
As someone fighting it currently, that's a beautiful outlook.
Be more Norm.
RIP old Norm. #noNewNorm
Rest In peace Norm you brought so much joy and laughter to my world I will miss you. I wish all of Norms friends and family the best during this sad time.
